Why, what and how?
War is both art and science and in itself an immense study that comprises all others. I therefore believe that it is essential to study and understand the art and sciences of other fields as well. There is much to be learnt from the history of warfare, but then you would only be a student of history. Yet, in order to better understand your enemy as well as your own troops, is it not essential to also understand our biology, like how our brains construct the world? Or when we want to understand our adversary, is it not essential to know how this adversary views the world and what he or she values? Just as warfare is (unfortunately) often all-encompassing and with few limitations, so should our search for knowledge and understanding be. It is therefore that we should look Beyond the Art of War.
So who am I and what will I write about? I am an active officer in the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces and from a professional point of view I am primarily interested in the art and science of war. However, I am also personally fascinated by philosophy and science, and specifically the philosophy of science. I will therefore write about pretty much everything, but at the same time only one thing: explaining how the world (possibly) works, knowing that no explanation will ever be the correct one.
